BEWARE OF INSURANCE COMPANIES STATING SHOPS CAN ONLY CHARGE $17.00 PER DAY FOR VEHICLE STORAGE
Recently an insurance company representative informed a member body shop that the Public Utility Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently ruled that shops can only charge $17.00 per day for vehicle storage. THIS IS NOT CORRECT.
After contacting the PUCO for clarification, this rule only applies to vehicles that were towed to a storage facility by a towing company without permission of the vehicle’s owner. For example, if a vehicle is improperly parked on private property and the property owner has the vehicle towed to a vehicle storage lot without permission of the vehicle owner, that storage facility can only charge the vehicle owner $17.00 per day. Again, this only applies to vehicle towed to a storage facility and without permission of the vehicle’s owner.
Please inform any insurance company representative that this rule does not apply to mechanical or body shops. Should they have any questions, please have them contact the PUCO.
